Norway’s Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide strongly criticized the US’s recent sanctions against officials at the International Criminal Court (ICC), including President Tomoko Akane. Eide stated the sanctions undermine the integrity and independence of the international legal system by targeting individuals fulfilling their legal duties. The US State Department previously announced intentions to systematically weaken the ICC and prevent it from prosecuting Americans. A US senator labeled the Hague-based court a threat to US sovereignty. Norway views the actions as a significant challenge to international law and the pursuit of accountability for war crimes. The move raises concerns about the future of international justice and the willingness of nations to cooperate with the ICC. This is not the first time the US has taken actions perceived as hostile towards the ICC.
