The International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) has advised a reduction in the catch quota for coastal cod north of 67 degrees north, setting a limit of 22,657 tonnes for 2027. This represents a decrease of approximately 19% from the 2026 quota, encompassing both commercial, tourist, and recreational fishing. The recommendation follows a downward revision of the cod stock assessment due to observed trends in research vessel surveys. Researchers cite continued high fishing mortality rates as a key concern, exceeding sustainable management plan targets. While catches decreased from 2023 to 2024, they rebounded in 2025 to levels seen in the last decade. ICES conversely recommends an increased quota of 3472 tonnes for the area between 62 and 67 degrees north for 2027, a rise from the 2349 tonnes advised for 2026.
