Mongolia’s National Center for Public Health (NCPH) is warning the public against storing food and beverages in non-food grade containers. Specifically, blue plastic canisters, industrial plastic containers, and non-food grade bags carry a risk of chemical leaching into consumables like water, milk, and dairy products. This risk is increased by exposure to sunlight, high temperatures, and repeated use of the containers. The NCPH recommends using food-grade stainless steel (304/316), glass containers, undamaged plastic containers with proper lids, traditional wooden vessels, or containers specifically marked for food use. Studies have shown high levels of heavy metals in water stored in yellow and blue plastic containers, with over 70% of such containers originating from imports, primarily China. The NCPH advises utilizing designated containers when storing and transporting water to safeguard public health.
