Nobel Peace laureate Navi Pillay has strongly criticized the United States’ sanctions imposed on the International Criminal Court (ICC). The EU has also voiced its significant concern, expressing “deep regret” regarding the measures taken by the US. Pillay described the sanctions as “unacceptable,” highlighting the impact on the ICC's ability to conduct independent investigations and pursue accountability for atrocity crimes. The sanctions, which include visa restrictions and financial penalties, were implemented in response to the ICC’s investigation into alleged war crimes committed by US personnel in Afghanistan. This action has raised concerns about political interference in the work of an independent international legal body. The move is widely seen as undermining the principles of international justice and the rule of law, potentially hindering efforts to hold perpetrators of serious crimes accountable globally.
