Niue, a small coral atoll situated in the southern Pacific Ocean, achieved self-governance on October 19, 1974. This made Niue a self-governing state in free association with New Zealand. The island nation, Niue, remains largely unknown to many despite its political status. Its location in the heart of the South Pacific contributes to its relative obscurity. The establishment of self-governance allowed Niue to manage its internal affairs while maintaining a close relationship with New Zealand regarding defense and foreign affairs. Niue presents a unique case study in post-colonial political arrangements within the Pacific region.
