Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has initiated legal action against the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL). The lawsuit centers on the NNPCL’s alleged failure to provide a public accounting of ₦5.9 billion spent on its recent transition and rebranding. Specifically, SERAP is questioning the use of ₦2.9 billion from petroleum product proceeds for incorporation expenses. The organization argues that transparency and accountability are crucial regarding the spending of public funds. SERAP seeks a court order compelling the NNPCL to disclose details of the financial transactions related to the rebranding process. This legal challenge aims to ensure responsible management of Nigeria’s petroleum resources and adherence to principles of good governance. The case highlights ongoing concerns about financial transparency within Nigeria’s oil sector.
