The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has expressed grave concern over the increasing number of doctors leaving the country, a trend known as “japa.” This exodus now extends to medical students, who are reportedly making plans to emigrate before even finishing their education. NMA President, Professor Afekhide-Ernest Omoti, highlighted the severity of the situation, noting it presents a substantial risk to Nigeria’s healthcare system. The association’s statement came in response to inquiries regarding the growing brain drain within the medical profession. This early planning for emigration suggests a deep-seated dissatisfaction among future doctors regarding working conditions and opportunities within Nigeria. The NMA fears a worsening healthcare landscape if this trend continues unchecked, potentially exacerbating existing challenges in accessing quality medical care.
