A professor at the University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria, has cautioned that parasites, contamination, and inadequate handling practices are creating significant public health concerns within Nigeria’s fishery sector. Professor Sidney Obidimma Nzeako, of the Department of Animal and Environmental Biology, highlighted these risks in an interview with Vanguard Agrobiz. He explained that these issues stem from natural parasite presence combined with deficiencies in fish production and post-harvest handling. These combined factors endanger consumers across Nigeria. The expert emphasized the potential for serious health repercussions if these problems are not addressed promptly. This calls for improved regulation and quality control measures throughout the entire fish supply chain in Nigeria to safeguard public well-being.
