Nguyen Van Tuyen, originating from Vinh An county, distinguished himself early in the Trung Hung period through military achievements. He rose to the rank of Guard Commander and actively participated in campaigns, notably alongside Lê Văn Duyệt to suppress unrest in Quảng Ngãi. Tuyen spearheaded the construction of the Vĩnh Tế canal, a vital infrastructure project. Subsequently, he was appointed as Military Commander of Định Tường and Vĩnh Thanh provinces. His responsibilities extended to overseeing Châu Đốc and providing protection to the Cambodian kingdom. Records from the Đại Nam nhất thống chí chronicle his significant role in establishing and defining the southern territories.
