New zoning regulations are now in effect for Slovakia’s Tatra, Low Tatras, Mala Fatra, and Poloniny National Parks. Despite the new zoning, the parks will not have full control over the majority of their forest lands. A three-month transition period has begun where approximately 55,000 hectares of state-owned land will be transferred from the State Forests (Lesy SR) to the national parks for management. The final outcome of the zoning is still under review by the European Commission to ensure it aligns with the national recovery plan. Controversially, hunting has been permitted in previously protected areas like Ticha and Koprova Valley, among other old reserves. The European Commission’s decision will determine the long-term impact on forest management within these protected areas.
