Greece is piloting a new system designed to regulate access to specialist medical care. The initiative requires patients to obtain a referral from their primary care physician before consulting specialists, such as cardiologists. Currently, the system is undergoing testing phases to assess its functionality and effectiveness. This change aims to improve the organization of healthcare access and potentially reduce unnecessary specialist appointments. The Health Insurance Organization (EOPYY) is overseeing the implementation and evaluation of the referral process. Primary care physicians are actively involved in the trial, providing feedback on the system’s operation. The goal is to create a more structured pathway for patients needing specialized medical attention.
