A new self-proclaimed state, named Gapla, has emerged in the Balkans, situated between Belgrade, Sarajevo, and Zagreb. It is the second such micronation to appear along the Danube River, following the previously established Liberland. While largely unrecognized, the founders point to a historical precedent for the role of these micro-states. The founder of Gapla previously gained international attention by establishing another country as a teenager and addressing the United Nations at age 17. Details regarding Gapla’s governance, population, and economic plans remain scarce. The emergence of Gapla highlights a continuing trend of individuals attempting to establish independent entities within existing national borders. Further reporting will be needed to assess the long-term viability and impact of this new declaration.
