A proposed new Bill sponsored by Nyeri Central MP Duncan Maina seeks to crack down on individuals masquerading as dentists or eye specialists. The legislation aims to amend the Medical Practitioners and Dentists Act (Cap 253) to introduce stricter penalties for unqualified practitioners. Under the new proposal, those found guilty of practicing without certification could face fines of up to Sh 5 million. Alternatively, offenders may be sentenced to a jail term of up to 10 years in default of the fine. This move is intended to protect public health by eliminating fraudulent medical services. The Bill emphasizes the need for professional accountability within the dental and optometry sectors. By increasing the legal risks, the government hopes to deter unqualified persons from offering specialized medical care.
