Mongolia’s National Agency for Meteorology and Environmental Monitoring has launched a new automated weather observation system at Chinggis Khaan International Airport, enhancing flight weather services to modern standards. The project, implemented in collaboration with the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the Korea Meteorological Administration, received $250,000 in funding. Installation began in August 2023 and concluded with the system becoming operational on October 2nd on the airport’s runways. Campbell Scientific Limited was selected through a WMO tender to install the equipment on runways R11 and R29. The new system includes ultrasonic wind sensors, runway visual range (RVR) sensors, and advanced meteorological visibility detectors, as well as GPS time synchronization – all new technology for Mongolia’s national weather network, improving aviation safety.
