The Dutch cabinet has finalized plans to reform the public broadcasting system in the Netherlands. The core of the reform involves consolidating the current eleven broadcasting organizations into four "broadcasting houses." The public broadcasters NOS and NTR will merge under the name NOS. Minister Letschert of Education, Culture and Science states the restructuring aims to reduce administrative burdens and increase collaborative responsibility, allowing public broadcasting to focus on quality programming, strong journalism, and digital innovation. Potential collaborations include KRO-NCRV, Omroep Max, and WNL; EO, VPRO, and Human; AVROTROS and Powned; and BNNVARA and Omroep Zwart (pending Omroep Zwart’s access). The new system effectively closes the door to new broadcasting organizations joining the system, but also protects existing ones from being removed, while the Media Commission retains oversight.
