Dutch columnist Annemarie van Gaal has proposed a novel solution to the country’s asylum seeker challenges, suggesting a temporary halt to accepting new applicants. Van Gaal challenges the narrative that the Netherlands receives fewer asylum requests than other European nations. Her proposal centers around redistributing asylum seekers across European countries based on available landmass, arguing that this would create a fairer system. According to the proposal, the Netherlands could potentially suspend asylum intake for ten years if this redistribution model were implemented. Van Gaal presented this idea during an appearance on the “Nieuws van de dag” program, advocating for a shift in how asylum responsibilities are shared within Europe. The suggestion aims to alleviate pressure on countries with limited space and resources, while ensuring a more equitable distribution of asylum seekers across the continent.
