The Netherlands has lifted its national bird housing order, initially implemented to control avian influenza. The final regional restriction, in the Gelderse Vallei area, was removed today. Government officials cite a decreasing number of infections, with the last confirmed cases reported on May 14th in Biddinghuizen and May 23rd in Marrum, where limited local restrictions remain. Alongside the lifting of the housing order, the ban on bird exhibitions has also been rescinded, though strict conditions apply to the participation of susceptible bird species. These conditions include limits on the number of participants and post-exhibition quarantine periods. While infection rates have fallen, the government warns the virus remains unpredictable and present in wild bird populations. Consequently, mandatory vaccination for laying hens is being considered to further mitigate the risk of large-scale outbreaks.
