The Dutch national government has stated it cannot financially support the construction of a tram line to the future Rijnenburg housing district in Utrecht. Minister Karremans of Infrastructure and Water Management informed RTV Utrecht that current budgetary constraints prevent funding for new initiatives like the "Rijnenburglijn." The city of Utrecht deems the tram line essential for enabling the planned construction of over 20,000 homes starting in 2035. While funding has been secured for a tram line from Utrecht Centraal to Nieuwegein, the extension to Rijnenburg requires national funding that will not be provided. Local authorities fear residents will rely heavily on cars without adequate public transport. The government is currently prioritizing existing projects due to financial deficits, and the Rijnenburg line is not on that list.
