The minority cabinet in the Netherlands is considering amendments to its proposed wealth tax plan following significant opposition. Finance Minister Heinen announced this willingness to revise the plans during the second day of the General Financial Review, aiming to spare smaller savers and investors. Originally, the cabinet proposed lowering the exemption threshold for box 3 investments, impacting those earning over €1,000 in annual returns, to free up funds for a new investment profits tax. However, this plan faced criticism from both left and right-wing opposition parties, threatening the budget's approval. Minister Heinen acknowledged that the initially proposed threshold of €100,000 in savings may have been poorly chosen, affecting more individuals than intended, and expressed readiness to consider an alternative threshold. Finding alternative revenue sources to offset the changes, however, presents a challenge due to limited budgetary flexibility. The Minister intends to consult with the Second Chamber regarding a revised exemption limit.
