The Dutch cabinet’s advice to ban mobile phones throughout schools is receiving mixed reactions from educational organizations. The VO-raad, representing secondary schools, considers the advice excessive, noting that over 57% of schools already employ a “Home or in the Locker” policy and this percentage is increasing. Conversely, the Algemene Onderwijsbond (Aob) believes the cabinet’s advice would be beneficial, citing improvements in classroom concentration following a 2024 agreement prohibiting phones in classrooms. The new proposal extends the ban to include breaks, hallways, and schoolyards. The Maerlant College in Brielle has already implemented a total phone ban this school year, requiring students to keep phones locked away or at home. The school uses sealed phone pouches for violations, with suspension for refusal, aiming to improve student interaction, academic performance, and overall safety.
