The Netherlands is anticipating its warmest night on record, with temperatures in Beek, Limburg, potentially exceeding the current high of 24.4 degrees Celsius set in 2018. The Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) attributes this to a sustained heatwave combined with minimal nighttime cooling. Experts warn that consistently warm nights hinder the body’s ability to recover, leading to fatigue and reduced heat tolerance during the day. This trend is linked to increasing global temperatures caused by greenhouse gas emissions, with the Netherlands experiencing a rise of approximately 2 degrees Celsius. The frequency of warm summer days—those exceeding 20 degrees Celsius—is increasing, particularly in urban areas where buildings retain heat. Warm nights disrupt sleep, impacting daytime functioning and exacerbating the effects of the heat, according to thermophysiologist Boris Kingma.
