The Dutch government previously apologized in 2021 for the transgender law in effect between 1985 and 2014. A new research report, “An Inhumane Law,” from Radboud University, now reveals the profound suffering experienced by those affected. Researchers interviewed 28 transgender and intersex individuals who described the physical, psychological, and social damage caused by the law’s requirements for legal gender change. These requirements included irreversible sterilization – the removal of the uterus and ovaries or testicles – and being unmarried, forcing some into divorce. The report highlights the deep and lasting impact of forced infertility on individuals’ lives, including grief, pain, and the loss of biological parenthood. The barriers to gender recognition also led to years of living with incorrect official documents, creating significant difficulties in daily life, as illustrated by the experience of Carlo Weide at an airport in Greece.
