Nepal is currently honoring Adikavi Bhanubhakta Acharya, widely considered the nation’s most revered poet. However, recent analysis focuses on a lesser-known work, “Badhu Siksha” (Instructions for Women). Experts argue the text, while historically significant, promotes a patriarchal worldview in its guidance to women. This re-evaluation prompts a critical examination of Acharya’s legacy beyond his famous translation of the Ramayan. Scholars suggest the work reflects the societal norms of its time but doesn’t excuse its reinforcing of gender inequalities. The revisiting of “Badhu Siksha” aims to foster a more nuanced understanding of Nepal’s literary history. It also highlights the importance of applying contemporary ethical standards when evaluating historical texts.
