Amidst escalating monkey-related damage to maize crops, the Arghakhanchi district in Nepal has initiated a novel solution: hiring 26 dedicated “monkey watchers.” These individuals will be stationed in maize fields for the next two months, focusing on deterring primate raids that threaten farmers' livelihoods. The move comes as agricultural losses due to monkeys have been steadily increasing, impacting local food security. The watchers’ primary role will be proactive monitoring and employing non-lethal methods to fend off the animals. This temporary employment initiative offers a direct response to the immediate crisis faced by farmers. Authorities hope this intervention will safeguard the maize harvest and offer a degree of relief to the affected agricultural community. The program highlights the growing challenge of human-wildlife conflict in the region.
