Recent devastating floods in Nepal’s Bhotekoshi and Trishuli river systems have generated an estimated 2.2 million tonnes of debris, according to a UNDP assessment. This wreckage encompasses collapsed structures, personal possessions, uprooted vegetation, and significant amounts of rocks and sediment. The floods have directly affected over 84,000 individuals residing in 17 different municipalities. The scale of the debris presents a considerable challenge to recovery efforts, hindering access and further endangering affected communities. Immediate needs include debris removal and provision of aid to displaced populations. The UNDP report highlights the urgent need for comprehensive disaster management and resilience building in the region to mitigate future impacts. Long-term reconstruction will depend on clearing this vast amount of material and restoring infrastructure.
