Initial reports of an earthquake in Nepal causing a devastating flood have been revised. The U.S. Geological Survey now attributes the disaster to a large landslide, not seismic activity. Experts suggest a glacial detachment may have initiated the landslide, leading to a subsequent surge of water. The resulting flood has claimed the lives of at least 157 people, with hundreds more reported missing. Many of those missing are believed to be foreign tourists in the region. Rescue operations are ongoing, hampered by the remote and challenging terrain. Authorities are working to assess the full extent of the damage and locate those still unaccounted for.
