NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte visited the White House in an effort to mend relations with President Trump, who has been increasingly critical of the alliance, particularly since the start of conflict with Iran. Rutte acknowledged Trump’s frustrations but highlighted the support NATO members provided during the conflict, citing the use of European bases for American aircraft. Tensions have risen due to instances like Spain denying the US military access to its bases for potential attacks on Iran and recent criticism from a US defense official regarding insufficient contributions from some allies. Trump has previously signaled potential reductions in US contributions to European security and troop withdrawals from the continent. Despite appearing somewhat unconvinced, Trump praised Rutte’s leadership, suggesting a different leader might have resulted in a complete breakdown in communication. Rutte reiterated his belief in Trump’s commitment to NATO as the alliance prepares for a summit in Ankara in July.
