The Mozambican Ministry of Transport and Logistics has begun disbursing transport subsidies following fuel price increases in May. However, several municipalities – Xai-Xai, Inhambane, and Chimoio – have opted to raise fares instead of participating in the subsidy program. The subsidy distribution is subject to an ongoing audit to ensure compliance, with potential accountability measures for discrepancies. While the first month’s payments have been made to eligible transporters, verification processes are being re-evaluated for future disbursements. The Mozambican Federation of Road Transport Associations (FEMATRO) confirmed the initial payments but explained the subsidy currently excludes inter-district and inter-provincial transport. The government is reviewing a tariff proposal from FEMATRO for inter-provincial routes. A system for better expense control related to fuel will be implemented after the initial three-month subsidy period.
