Mozambique’s National Immigration Service (SENAMI) has reported an 18 percent increase in cross-border travel during the first five months of 2024. This rise is attributed to increased economic activity and regional integration. The majority of travelers are Mozambican citizens returning from neighboring countries, primarily South Africa, for work and family reasons. SENAMI officials indicate a significant uptick in travelers utilizing legal border crossings, suggesting improved border management and a decrease in irregular migration. The increase also reflects growing trade and investment within the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region. Authorities are working to streamline border procedures to accommodate the growing volume of travelers while maintaining security protocols. This trend is viewed positively as a sign of economic recovery and enhanced regional cooperation.
