Mozambique is considering measures to ensure children’s safe access to technology, addressing concerns about online risks. The discussion took place during a seminar in Maputo bringing together researchers from Mozambique, Angola, and China to address child rights in the digital age. Supreme Court President Adelino Muchanga highlighted the developmental opportunities offered by digital platforms but warned of dangers like sexual exploitation, harmful content, algorithmic manipulation, and privacy violations, with digital dependency being a major concern. Experts advocate for a “Safety by Design” approach, integrating security measures into the very creation of digital products and platforms. This preventative strategy aims to mitigate risks proactively rather than reactively. The goal is to regulate access without infringing on children’s rights, balancing opportunity with protection in an increasingly digital world.
