A recent act of vandalism at a transformer station in Bilene, Mozambique, has left over 70 families and two schools without electricity. Two local merchants have been arrested and confessed to involvement in the theft, but are refusing to identify those who ordered the act. The state-owned electricity company, EDM, reports escalating attacks on its infrastructure in Gaza province, resulting in estimated damages of approximately eight million meticais. Bilene, Chókwè, and Chibuto districts are particularly affected by the growing illegal trade in stolen electrical materials. Police are currently searching for the alleged ringleader of the group responsible, hoping to dismantle the network supplying the illicit market. The damage is compounded by recent flooding in the region, which has also impacted power infrastructure and distribution lines. EDM officials express concern over the ongoing situation and its impact on local communities and tourism.
