The suspension of the management of Mozambique’s Niassa Special Reserve, and related conservation entities, has been lifted by the Secretary of State for Niassa Province, Silva Livone. This decision reverses a near 20-day suspension aimed at restructuring the reserve’s administration. The reinstated entities include the reserve’s administration, Buffalo Safaris, Nhalicanga Wildness, and the WCS NGO, all of which are involved in wildlife resource exploitation. The reversal follows a report and recommendations from a monitoring commission presented during a recent council session. Livone initially suspended the groups to address mismanagement and conflicts between operators, reserve management, and local communities, particularly regarding human-wildlife conflict. The lifting of the suspension indicates a shift in approach following the commission’s assessment and proposed follow-up actions.
