Mozambique is experiencing a significant rise in the cost of living, with inflation reaching 7.22% year-on-year in May. The National Institute of Statistics (INE) reported a monthly increase of 2.32% in prices for goods and services. This surge is primarily attributed to substantial increases in fuel prices, particularly diesel, which rose by 44.5% in one month, and gasoline, up 11.9%. Consequently, transportation costs have dramatically increased, with urban and suburban transport rising by 11.9%, taxis by 23.5%, and long-distance bus fares by 26.3%. Food prices are also contributing to the inflationary pressure, notably fresh fish (up 11.7%) and tomatoes (up 5.7%). While some food items saw price decreases, these were not enough to offset the overall increase in living expenses, impacting household budgets amid stagnant wages.
