A previously unpublished United Nations report details a surge in sexual violence in Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado region since the start of the conflict in 2017. The violence is perpetrated by both the Islamist insurgent group, linked to the shebab, and Mozambican armed forces responding to the insurgency. Cabo Delgado is a resource-rich area, making the conflict particularly concerning. Women are disproportionately affected by the escalating brutality. The findings are part of an investigative project called “Mozambique Exposed,” coordinated by Forbidden Stories, with contributions from Radio France Internationale (RFI). The report highlights a pattern of abuse occurring amidst ongoing fighting and retaliation. This investigation brings to light previously undisclosed details of the humanitarian crisis unfolding in the region.
