The Bank of Mozambique is advocating for clear regulations governing the use of Artificial Intelligence within the nation’s financial system. Governor Rogério Zandamela announced this position during the opening of the institution’s scientific conference, citing the rapid integration of AI into banking operations. The bank’s 2025-2029 strategy already anticipates AI adoption, but Zandamela emphasized the need for regulatory frameworks to mitigate risks and maintain public trust. He stressed that successful implementation requires collaboration between financial institutions, academia, innovators, and the public. Concerns were raised regarding data privacy, cybersecurity threats, and potentially harmful automated decisions impacting consumers. The bank aims to balance innovation with consumer protection, having already launched digital transformation initiatives since 2021, culminating in the approval of its 2025 Digital Transformation Strategy.
