Approximately 800 Mozambican citizens have returned to the country after experiencing acts of xenophobia abroad, according to the National Migration Service. Additionally, over 200 Malawian citizens utilized Mozambique as a safe passage to return to their home country. These developments were reported during a press conference where authorities also revealed the deportation of 5,302 Mozambicans due to illegal immigration status in foreign nations. Of those deported, roughly 800 were specifically victims of xenophobic acts, while the remainder faced repatriation for illegal entry or overstaying visas. Between the 11th and 19th of the current month, 221 Malawian citizens were intercepted at the Ponta do Ouro border post after illegally crossing from South Africa into Mozambique. Mozambican authorities coordinated with relevant agencies to ensure the safe and assisted return of the Malawian citizens to their country of origin, providing support along the journey.
