Morocco is implementing a new type of pavement designed to reduce temperatures in urban areas. This "sponge" pavement differs from traditional asphalt by allowing water to permeate its surface, utilizing evaporation for natural cooling. Pilot projects are currently being tested in Marrakech and Agadir, demonstrating Morocco’s commitment to sustainable urban development. The innovative surface aims to mitigate the “urban heat island” effect, where cities experience significantly warmer temperatures than surrounding areas. By staying up to 16°F cooler, the pavement promises increased comfort for residents. This initiative forms part of a broader strategy to enhance climate resilience and improve the quality of life in Moroccan cities.
