Morocco has sent a collection of its seeds to the Svalbard Global Seed Vault, often referred to as the “Doomsday” vault, located in Norway. A source within Morocco’s National Office for Cereals and Legumes confirmed the move is part of a global effort to create a unique seed repository. This vault aims to safeguard agricultural biodiversity by providing a backup of seed samples from around the world. The seeds will be stored in the vault for potential use in the future, even centuries from now, should major global catastrophes occur. This contribution demonstrates Morocco’s commitment to international collaboration on food security and the preservation of vital plant resources. The initiative ensures a crucial genetic reserve is available for rebuilding agricultural systems if needed.
