Moroccan authorities arrested 111 migrants, primarily from sub-Saharan Africa, on Saturday as they attempted to cross into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. This action follows a surge of over 72,000 migrants into Ceuta two weeks prior, an event that resulted in at least 96 deaths and heightened tensions within the EU. The recent attempt was spurred by social media calls for further mass crossings, prompting increased security measures from both Morocco and Spain. Moroccan police utilized tear gas to disperse migrant groups, while Spanish forces bolstered security within Ceuta, including deploying soldiers to guard key locations. Madrid has responded by installing a maritime barrier and increasing police presence in the enclave to prevent future crossings. The Interior Minister affirmed that reinforcements will remain as long as necessary to restore order and prevent similar events.
