A recent Facebook post by journalist Tsedensodnom Bulganamir, widely shared and praised, questions why Mongolia, despite its vast natural resources and small population, hasn't achieved greater economic prosperity. Mongolia possesses abundant reserves of coal, copper, gold, uranium, iron ore, oil, and renewable energy potential, coupled with a strategic geographic location. With a population of around 3.5 million, the nation has sufficient resources to support its people and develop industry. The core issue isn’t a lack of resources, but the inability to convert them into economic power. The author argues Mongolia’s challenges stem from political, institutional, infrastructural, and geopolitical missteps, not inherent limitations, and that poverty isn’t inevitable. The focus should be on effectively addressing the needs of its relatively small population rather than aiming for unrealistic large-scale ambitions.
