Mongolia is set to overhaul its university entrance exam, currently in place for 20 years, beginning with trials next year and full implementation by 2028. The Ministry of Education aims to align the exam with internationally recognized standards, specifically the SAT model. Currently, students take a general exam selecting from ten subjects, regardless of their intended major. The new system will introduce specialized exams tailored to fields of study, with advanced mathematics for engineering and mathematics students, and a core mathematics exam for fields like chemistry and biology. Crucially, all applicants will now be required to pass a standardized aptitude test assessing their readiness for higher education, focusing on Mongolian language and mathematics. Passing this aptitude test will be a prerequisite for taking the subject-specific exams, ensuring students possess the foundational skills for university-level study. This reform seeks to better assess student capabilities and align education with career paths.
