Authorities in Mongolia have detained several individuals involved in protests against oil exploration activities conducted by “Mongolia Fyson Energy” in Sukhbaatar province. The protests stemmed from local opposition to the company’s operations, which began in July 2026 following government approval for exploration rights. Protesters allegedly entered company campsites without authorization on August 14th and 15th, disrupted work, and filmed the facilities, claiming the company was attempting illegal oil extraction. Police responded to reports of trespass, property damage, and disturbances, launching a criminal investigation. The individuals involved have been held in custody for 30 days while the investigation proceeds under specific articles of the Mongolian Criminal Code. The company has a permit to explore for oil in the region, but local residents have voiced concerns about the environmental impact and potential disruption to their livelihoods.
