A proposed amendment to Mongolia’s national holiday law, which would have shifted public holidays falling on weekends to the following work week, has been sent back to its initiators by Parliament. The bill, initially submitted in June 2023, aimed to address situations where major national celebrations like Naadam Festival and the anniversary of the People’s Revolution coincided with weekend days. It also included amendments to the Labor Law to reflect this change. Despite progressing through committee stages, the bill failed to be ratified during the spring session. Final discussions were scheduled for December 11th, but the proposal was returned to its sponsors. This year, Naadam falls on a weekend, raising the possibility of a work extension unless the government intervenes. Last year, a similar situation prompted a government decision to grant employees time off on the following Tuesday and Wednesday.
