Mongolia’s parliament is considering amendments to its Family Law, including provisions regarding financial support for family members. A proposed article 49 would require adult, able-bodied children to financially support parents who are unable to support themselves due to disability, age, or other factors. The amendment allows for agreements between siblings to divide support responsibilities, with courts resolving disputes if no agreement is reached. Crucially, a new article 50, which received significant support, extends this obligation to include grandparents, siblings, aunts, and uncles in supporting orphaned or vulnerable children. This provision also allows for court intervention to determine support contributions among relatives when consensus cannot be achieved. The bill was initially submitted by the government in November 2025 and is currently under debate.
