Renowned Mongolian artist Jalhaajavyn Mönkh-Tsetseg’s solo exhibition, “What Does the Gazelle Dream?”, has opened at the KHAAN Gallery. The exhibition centers around the gazelle as a symbol to explore the spiritual world of the steppe and the delicate relationship between humans and nature. Mönkh-Tsetseg initially developed this theme over two decades, culminating in a contemporary dance project in 2025, of which she was the initiator and art director. The KHAAN Gallery exhibition expands on this project through paintings, sculptures, and video installations. A key focus of the work is the declining population and shrinking habitat of the white gazelle in eastern Mongolia, highlighting the impact of human activity and infrastructure on their migration patterns and grazing lands. The artwork prompts reflection on the interconnectedness of humans and non-human life, loss, and transformation, portraying “dreams” not just as nocturnal visions but as images preserved in the land, body, and memory. The exhibition encourages viewers to contemplate the unseen histories of the steppe and the meaning of coexisting with the natural world.
