A recent study reveals a 3% increase in urbanization and an 11% decrease in pastureland around the Bogd Khan Mountain Protected Area, leading to habitat degradation and fragmentation for the Mongolian argali sheep. This encroachment by human activity has resulted in concentrated, high-density argali populations in limited areas, hindering natural range expansion. To address this, the Institute of Biology of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences, in collaboration with the Bogd Khan Mountain Protected Area Administration, is undertaking a relocation project. The project involves capturing argali from high-density, isolated populations and reintroducing them to suitable habitats with lower densities. This initiative aims to stabilize argali populations, restore their distribution, reduce the risk of zoonotic disease outbreaks, prevent poaching, and protect biodiversity. The relocation program is conducted under the supervision and with the approval of relevant professional organizations.
