The Mongolian government has approved a resolution aimed at increasing transparency and accessibility of strategic reserves, particularly focusing on meat and vegetables. Previously, a weak monitoring system across all stages – from preparation to sale – led to irregularities, including undelivered supplies and undocumented transactions with inflated prices. To address this, the government will digitize record-keeping and implement a unified system, overseen by the Ministry of Finance, to track the entire supply chain using electronic payments. The initiative will encompass reserve creation, storage, distribution, and sales, aiming for full visibility. The Mayor of Ulaanbaatar has been specifically tasked with overseeing meat reserve preparations for 2027. This aims to prevent misuse of subsidized loans, increase accessibility, and foster competition. The system intends to move away from opaque state intervention towards a more competitive, multi-stakeholder market, and similar measures are being considered for other strategic commodities like fuel, wheat, and vegetables.
