A recent interview with B.Ariuntugs, a senior specialist at the Drug Enforcement Department of the General Police Agency of Mongolia, revealed concerning trends in drug-related crimes over the past nine years. Investigations involving 2,422 individuals across 2,100 cases show that 60.5% of those implicated have completed secondary education, while 59.6% are unemployed. A significant proportion of offenders are young – 107 are aged 13-17, and those aged 18-25 constitute 54.8%. Disturbingly, individuals aged 13-35 make up 91% of all drug-related crime participants. In 2025 alone, 83 minors were investigated for these offenses, with most facing penalties under the Law on Administrative Offences. There's been a notable increase in teenage involvement in these crimes in the last 2-3 years. A majority (70%) of cases involve wild hemp grown in Mongolia, while 25% relate to synthetic drugs from abroad, and the remaining 5% involve misuse of prescription medications.
