Mongolia is closely monitoring a potential plague outbreak after symptoms were detected in Holunbuir, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, China. This comes after a woman in Irkutsk, Russian Federation, died from pneumonia of unknown origin earlier in October. Initially, Russian authorities reported the case was not plague-related and shared results from 5,000 tests with the World Health Organization. However, suspicious symptoms have now emerged in Holunbuir. Mongolian officials are coordinating with Chinese counterparts and have dispatched a working group to assess preparedness along the border. Representatives from Chinese health authorities are currently in Mongolia to collaborate on the situation and consult with the World Health Organization.
