Mongolian energy sector workers have announced a strike set to begin on the 30th of this month, citing financial difficulties and losses within the industry. Energy Minister B. Naidalaa acknowledged the sector’s challenges, stating that workers are currently discussing potential wage reductions rather than increases. The Minister affirmed a commitment to supporting the sector’s 17,800 professionals and is engaging in further discussions with unions to address concerns beyond just wages, including workplace safety and salary structure optimization. While acknowledging the principle of wage increases, Naidalaa emphasized the need for careful calculation and a fair, systematic approach. She clarified that as Minister, she doesn’t directly set wages but is negotiating with unions to support the sector. Additionally, a tender for solar power plants in five provinces has been completed, with 135 companies initially participating and 19 competing in the second round, resulting in a 220-megawatt capacity expected to be operational before December, at a rate of 5.98 cents per kilowatt-hour.
